Congaplex Ingredients

A line-by-line look at what's inside Standard Process Congaplex, including active components and excipients.

Congaplex's formula has been remarkably stable over the years. Each chewable wafer combines a calcium-lactate base with two Standard Process Cytosol™ extracts — proprietary protein-extraction processes applied to bovine thymus and bovine spleen tissue — plus ribonucleic acid (RNA). Below is what's actually inside a serving and what each component is doing.

Active Ingredients

The active ingredients fall into three groups: a mineral source, a nucleic acid, and tissue-derived protein concentrates. The exact milligram amounts of the Cytosol extracts are part of Standard Process's proprietary formulation and are not published as individual breakouts on the label.

Other Ingredients (Excipients)

The 'other ingredients' line typically includes calcium stearate (a flow agent), arabic gum (a binder from the acacia tree), and honey (used in processing). These are common in chewable supplements and are usually present in small amounts. The wheat-germ flour, while small in quantity, is the excipient most often flagged by users with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Allergens and Sensitivities

Congaplex contains beef-derived ingredients (the thymus and spleen Cytosol extracts) and wheat (defatted wheat-germ flour). It is not appropriate for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone avoiding bovine products on cultural, religious, or allergy grounds, and it is not gluten-free. The label does not list dairy, soy, egg, fish, shellfish, or peanut as ingredients, but as with any animal-tissue-based product, contamination tolerances are different from synthetic vitamin formulas.

Sourcing and Quality Notes

Standard Process manufactures Congaplex at its Wisconsin facility and emphasizes its in-house farming and supply chain. Bovine ingredients are sourced from cattle the company describes as raised without added hormones; sourcing details for individual lots are not publicly disclosed at the consumer level. The product is sold primarily through licensed practitioners (chiropractors, naturopaths, integrative MDs, dietitians) rather than direct-to-consumer retail, which is part of how Standard Process positions itself versus mass-market supplement brands. A practitioner's evaluation of Standard Process's sourcing standards is included in this clinical review of Congaplex by a licensed practitioner.

How Ingredients Compare to Similar Products

Compared with mainstream immune supplements — vitamin C, zinc lozenges, elderberry — Congaplex is doing something quite different. The mainstream products supply isolated nutrients or plant compounds with at least some clinical-trial evidence. Congaplex relies on tissue concentrates and the whole-food-supplement model, which has stronger advocates and stronger critics. Within Standard Process's own catalog, Congaplex sits alongside other immune-oriented products like Immuplex and Allerplex, each with a different formulation focus.
